The Chileans don’t know what they’ve got,” the well dressed, middle-aged gentleman said at an uncharacteristically slow pace for a Chilean Spanish speaker. He said it with a lugubrious undertone in his voice, and with a facial expression that reminded me of the last few funerals I had attended. His comment was a response to our praise for the beauty of Chilean Patagonia. When we asked him to elaborate, he said that his fellow citizens showed a deplorable lack of appreciation for the spectacular geography and landscape of Chile. We were speechless, as it was obvious to us that the country was blessed with some of the most beautiful natural settings in the world. How could anybody fail to appreciate them?
